01 Profile

Ray Weston has spent more than four decades proving that the most powerful part of a performance is often the least showy: the right note, in the right place, with the right feel.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Ray played in local Scottish bands before moving to London in 1976. His plan was simple and relentless — audition, meet musicians, play, learn, repeat. Work with signed and unsigned bands soon opened the door to recording studios.

Training with George McGowan and respected teacher Bob Armstrong sharpened that practical education. The result is a drummer at home in pop, post-punk, blues and hard rock, equally alert to a singer's phrasing, a guitar riff or the shape of a room.

02 The journey

1960s–70s

Records become a compass.

Ray began buying records at seven. The Beatles ignited the idea of becoming a drummer; Led Zeppelin and Stevie Wonder widened the map. His listening kept expanding, from rock and pop to orchestral music and everything compelling in between.

1981

A post-punk left turn.

Ray joined Alternative TV for Strange Kicks, the group's surprising pivot toward tightly formed new-wave pop. It was an early recorded chapter in a career that would resist being confined to a single style.

1990–94

Into Wishbone Ash.

Invited by Martin Turner, whom he knew from earlier work, Ray joined sessions for Strange Affair. Touring followed across Europe, Britain and Japan, then the muscular 1992 concert recording Live in Chicago.

1997–2007

A decade on the road.

Ray returned to Wishbone Ash for a sustained second tenure. It moved from the electronic experiments Trance Visionary and Psychic Terrorism through the acoustic Bare Bones, the studio albums Bona Fide and Clan Destiny, and extensive touring.

2010–20

The Butterfly years.

Ray first substituted for Iron Butterfly in 2010, then became the active live drummer through the band's 2015 return and the end of 2019, bringing his own authority to a catalogue built around one of rock's most famous drum features.

Today

Still discovering.

Performance, sessions and new projects continue the same principle that shaped the early London years: arrive prepared, stay open, and serve the music rather than the ego.

05 The instrument

Colour, weight, response.

Ray's Zildjian setup centres on dark, musical K-series voices. He has described A-series cymbals as studio tools, Ks for rock shows and large theatres, and Keropes for more subdued rooms.
